About Tonsils and Throat Conditions

The throat is a tube that pushes food and liquids to the esophagus. It moves air through the trachea or windpipe. It also houses the voicebox or larynx, tonsils, and epiglottis. Throat conditions may begin with a sore throat or hoarseness. That soreness could develop into a bacterial infection, like strep throat, laryngitis, or inflammation of the tonsils. Throat pain may also result from post-nasal drip or a viral infection. Most throat conditions are minor and heal independently, but more serious problems could require surgery to remove tonsils or cancer. Board-certified otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon Dr. Robert D. Pearson specializes in treating tonsillitis and throat conditions at Canyon View Ear, Nose & Throat. Schedule an appointment with our medical team in Cedar City, UT to find out how we can treat your tonsillitis or throat condition.

Treatments for Tonsils and Throat Conditions

Although considered a common childhood illness, tonsillitis does affect adults. The lymph nodes in the back of the throat are part of the immune system, producing white blood cells to help fight infections; however, there are some bacteria and viruses that can trigger tonsillitis.

Chronic tonsillitis, frequent throat infections, strep throat, or other serious conditions, including antibiotic immunity, may prompt Dr. Pearson to perform a tonsillectomy. A tonsillectomy also relieves any breathing or swallowing problems resulting from tonsillitis. Dr. Pearson may recommend surgery to prevent recurring bouts of tonsillitis or to treat the following:

  • Chronic bacterial or severe tonsillitis
  • Swollen or enlarged tonsils that cause airway obstructions
  • Snoring or sleep apnea
  • Cancerous tumors
  • Bleeding tonsils

After a tonsillectomy, Dr. Pearson may prescribe pain medications as needed and recommend these home remedies to aid in recovery:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
  • Eat soft, bland foods that won't hurt to swallow, such as gelatin or applesauce
  • Get plenty of bed rest

Antibiotics may be the treatment for certain throat conditions, including strep throat, mononucleosis, or other bacterial infections. Antihistamines and corticosteroids may be the best remedies for laryngitis. Head and neck cancer treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or a combination of these procedures. Dr. Pearson customizes treatment plans for each individual, depending on different factors, such as tumor location, cancer stage, age, and overall health.
